Section-A: Reading

  1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:

The old Turkish and other races, who inhabited Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia before the advent of Islam, were largely Buddhists and earlier still, during the period of the Epics, Hindus. The frontier area was one of the principal centres of old Indian culture and it abounds still with ruins of monuments and monasteries and, specially, of the great university of Taxila, which was at the height of its fame two thousand years ago, attracting students from all over India as well as different parts of Asia. Changes of religion made difference but could not chage entirely the mental backgrounds which the people of those areas had developed.

  1. Write a composition/an article on any one of the given topics in 100-150 words:

  1. You are Rohan/Roshni, a resident of 14, Nirala Nagar, Lucknow. You have recently been transferred to Prayagraj. You have shifted your furniture and other household items using the services of Agrasen Transport Company. You found that some of your furniture has been damaged while being moved. Write a letter to The Manager, Agrasen Transport Company, Transport Nagar, Lucknow, complaining about the same and demanding compensation for the damaged goods.

  1. Translate the following into English:

हमें पालतू और मूक पशुओं की तरह किसी के पीछे नहीं चलना चाहिए। जीवन के संघर्षों एवं आने वाले खतरों का निर्भीकता एवं साहस के साथ सामना करना चाहिए। भविष्य चाहे कितना भी उज्ज्वल एवं लुभावना क्यों न हो हमें उस पर भरोसा नहीं करना चाहिए। हमें बीती हुई बातों को बार-बार सोचना नहीं चाहिए। बस अपने कर्त्तव्यों के प्रति सचेत रहना चाहिए।
