Section-A (Reading)

  1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow:

An old man being distressed by ceaseless quarreling going on among any his sons, one day called them to him and showed them a bundle of sticks tied together, and asked if any of them was strong enough to break them. First one and then another tried, but although they were all robust and hefty young men, they all failed. He then untied the bundle and told to break each stick separately. Thus they did easily and all the sticks were soon broken inte pieces. Thus he taught them that united they would be strong but disunited they would always be weak.

(a) Why was the old man sad?  3

  1. Translate the following into English: 5

मेजर उसमान हमारे देश के एक प्रसिद्ध योद्ध थे। जव पाकिस्तान ने हमारे देश पर आक्रमण किया, तो उन्हें देश की रक्षा के लिए भेजा गया। राजौरी के युद्ध में वह मारे गये, किन्तु उनकी वीरता को हम भूल नहीं सकते। उन्होंने कभी भी अपने जीवन की चिन्ता नहीं की एक बार वह युद्ध में घायल हो गए। कुछ सिपाही उनके लिये वहुत दूर से थोड़ा पानी लाये, क्योंकि वे बहुत प्यासे थे। किन्तु उस वीर ने वह पानी स्वयं नहीं पिया। उन्होंने वह पानी एक दूसरे प्यासे सिपाही को दे दिया। कुछ देर बाद उनकी मृत्यु हो गई। ऐसे बीर और दयालु व्यक्ति को हम कभी नहीं भूल सकेंगे।
